Accidents and Illness

From time to time children will have accidents in the nursery. Basic First Aid will be administered and parents/carers informed. In the event that medical treatment is required every effort will be made to contact you, and arrangements made to enable you to accompany your child. All accidents are recorded in an accident book. You will also be asked to sign an accident form, this is kept as a record you have been informed.

If your child becomes ill during their time in nursery, every effort will be made to contact you. If we are unable to do so, we may use the emergency contact number, which you have given us. In an emergency we will call an ambulance.

Medicines

The administration of medicines prescribed by your family doctor is undertaken at the discretion of the Head teacher. We are generally happy to co-operate with you in doing so. When we do, in order to safeguard the health and safety of children, we follow procedures drawn up by Falkirk Council Education Authority and the Care Inspectorate.

Whenever you wish us to give your child medication, which is prescribed by your doctor or dentist, you should fill in request forms MED1 and MED 2 and give the medication to the Head teacher or Senior Early Years Officer. Please note that we are unable to give your child the first dose of a new medicine.

Prescribed medication should be clearly marked with your child’s name, the date prescribed, how often it has to be taken and for how long. Medication should remain in its original packaging and contain any accompanying patient information leaflet including instructions.

A third form, MED 3 is kept in school and is used to record the administration of medicine. A staff member will inform you if medicine has been administered at nursery. It is important that you inform nursery if you have administered medicine to your child before arriving at nursery.

Copies of the above request forms and guidance for completion can be collected from the school office.

Medical Care Plans

Some children who have medical conditions may require a medical care plan. This will be completed by a senior member of staff in partnership with parents/carers and other relevant health professionals. The medical care plan will be available in your child’s play area at all times and will be updated regularly. If your child has any changes to medication please inform us immediately.

Dental Health

The nursery is part of the Child Smile National Standards for Tooth brushing Programme. Within the nursery setting the children are encouraged to brush their teeth daily after snack. If an infection is present in the nursery, tooth brushing will be suspended on the advice of the Dental Health Authority

Infectious Diseases

Colds, flu and gastroenteritis are the most common infections affecting children. Every attempt is made to stop the spread of infection throughout the nursery. It is important that you keep your child off nursery in the early stages of flu and while they still have diarrhoea. Parents are advised that in the case of sickness or diarrhoea, children should stay at home for a full 48hours once the infection has passed.

It is also important that your child understands how to prevent picking up and spreading such infections. You will be able to get further advice about good health from staff in your Health Centre or GP Practice.

For advice about early detection and treatment for other infectious diseases e.g. chickenpox and mumps, please consult your GP or Nurse.
